One of the most common challenges in English is the correct use of articles. Here is a simple guide:

Use "a" when you talk about something for the first time or when it is not specific.
I saw a dog in the park. (This means any dog, not a particular one.)

Use "an" before a word that begins with a vowel sound.
I need an umbrella. ("Umbrella" starts with a vowel sound, so we use "an".)

Use "the" when you talk about something specific or when the listener knows exactly what you mean.
The book on the table is mine. (We know which book is being talked about.)

Why is this important?
Articles may seem small, but they help specify whether you are talking about something in general or something specific — and this can completely change the meaning of a sentence in English!
