Ey Up! Yorkshire, The Land of Tea, Tykes (or Lads), and Terriers
When I tell French people that I come from Yorkshire (yep, I’m a true Yorkshire girl), they immediately say, “Like the dog?” 🙄 And I say, “Not only ! For goodness’ sake! Yorkshire is so much more than that (admittedly cute) little dog.” 🐶 So, I thought I’d give you a bit of a cultural awakening about my beautiful region. 😁 🤩 We have so much to be proud of in Yorkshire!

🖼️ The Beautiful Scenery
The Yorkshire Moors — home to the Brontë sisters and their world-famous literature. 📚 Remember Wuthering Heights ? (And I’m not talking about the song from Kate Bush!) Then there are the Yorkshire Dales, the Yorkshire Coast, and historical cities such as York.
🗣️ The Accent and Dialect: “Nah then, how’s tha doin’?”
I was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. City of stainless steel. (Did you ever see The Full Monty? That’s Sheffield!)
When I moved to Woodsetts, a small village in South Yorkshire, I was ten, and it was like landing on a different planet! 🌍
First surprise: complete strangers talking to you! Passers-by in the street greeted you with “Ey up!” 👋 And I gradually got used to their language. ☺️
Yorkshire folk don’t just speak, they sing. The accent is rich, musical, and full of character. A simple “hello” becomes “ey up!” and “how are you?” transforms into “’ow’s tha doin’, love?”
Yorkshire people don’t waste words either. Why say “you are” when “tha” will do? Why bother with “nothing” when “nowt” rolls off the tongue better?
Some classics:
• Ey up – Hello!
• Nowt – Nothing
• Owt – Anything
• Gaffer – The boss
• Ginnel – A narrow alleyway (don’t get lost in one after a few pints!)
• Mardy – Moody
• Nesh – Feels the cold easily
• Reight – Right, good, OK
• Pop – Soft drink
And yes, if you can understand a full Yorkshire conversation without subtitles, you deserve a medal. 🏅
☕ The Food: From Yorkshire Pud to a Cuppa
Yorkshire folk take food seriously. We invented the Yorkshire pudding, and frankly, that should have been enough to make us a World Heritage Site. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, and perfect with gravy, mash, and a roast for Sunday dinner. 😋
Then there’s parkin (a sticky ginger cake that makes November bearable), fat rascals (don’t worry, it’s a scone, not a person), and Wensleydale cheese 🧀, which Wallace and Gromit helped make famous again.
And let’s not forget the humble brew (or cuppa). 🍵 A proper cup of Yorkshire Tea fixes everything from heartbreak to bad weather. ☔ Come rain or shine, morning to night, we drink tea.
🐶 The Yorkshire Terrier: Small Dog, Big Attitude
Ah, the Yorkshire Terrier. Everyone knows this little dog. Don’t be fooled by the size; these dogs have all the boldness of a miner and the loyalty of your nan. (grandmother) 👵🏼
Like true Yorkshire folk, they’re tough, proud, and full of personality (and a bit snappy!).
🌄 The Spirit of Yorkshire
Yorkshire isn’t just a place; it’s a way of life. It’s hiking across the moors in drizzle and calling it “fresh.” It’s the friendly nod from a stranger. It’s pride without pretension.
So next time you hear “ey up” or someone offers you a brew, take a moment. You’re in the company of proper, friendly folk. So don’t be mardy 🤭 go down t’ ginnel to the pub for a pint or a glass o’ pop and some fish an’ chips from t’ local chippy! 🍻🐟🍟
